Hello interwebs! Long time no see. It's the day before the Afterimages showing for the faculty. The showing in which a panel of professors, a impartial dance student and assorted staff and community members decide whether you'll live or die. Of the 22 pieces rehearsing right now, only about 10 will be in the concert. It is a dreaded day.
I'm making it sound much worse than it actually is to make a point. As an art marker it is very rare that you are not emotionally attached to your work. So regardless of how positive, or encouraging feedback is if your piece isn't chosen it hurts. That being said right now I taking some rest I had a very full weekend (including successfully making gumbo on the first try!) in preparation for tomorrow. I am enjoying a ginger ale and some indie rock. It's important to balance work with rest, especially in the pinch. My Irish Catholic upbringing sometimes causes me to forget that.
I'm showing two works tomorrow. The first is a group work for 11 women entitled Ceremonia, the second a personal solo is Four Meditations. Ceremonia was inspired by Leslie Marmon Silko's amazing novel Ceremony and set to really cool score of Juana Molina's music. Four Meditations is my first attempt a more PO. MO. piece. It's an eight minute, four section study of physical interpretations of artistic experimentation. I really love the soundtrack for this one. Born Ruffians, Justice and M.Ward are all great artists to dance to.
But that is all tomorrow. Tonight is for reading a bit of Why Suya Sings, then watching The Year One with my good friend Sara. She has promised me a back rub for my sore shoulders. Jack Black and body work! I live THE life.
CHEERS,
JSB

Audition Night
Well the 2009 AfterImages auditions are done, and now the waiting begins. Just because people wanted to see their "familes" over the "holiday weekend". Cut the umbilical chord jeez. :)
So until then I shall feed my creative mind with Dessa, muse and goddess of all things amazingly cool.
Watch and learn future cast.

Thoughts on Evolution
I do my best thinking in two places. The shower and while running. Today whilst doing the latter I began to ponder. IF humans had a natural predator that they escape by running AND there was still the same amount of paved surfaces, I would like to suggest that within a few generations humans would develop amazingly shock absorbant knees.

Last Time on the Merry Go Round
Well ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, this is it. The final year of my formal schooling. I'm feeling equally daunted and enlivened by the fact. I will soon have to be even more on my own, a "real" person if you will. Not a infant coddled tight against the bosom of scholarly art. But a true artist who must birth entire productions from the change in my sofa and the passion in my heart. Presently I just drop nice neat, forward thinking, but still deemed appropriate by members of completely different generations and culture than my own, 7 minute dances into the system. A system that I love and am grateful for. Yet a system that is not best for my work.
Perhaps it's just early onset senioritis. Or maybe it's that I just spent $70 on a workbook for a non-major class. And that it makes me ill.
Peace

It's so cliche right now but
This is brilliant. Very rarely to I say such things free of sarcasm. But Jacko is every bit as good as Gene Kelly. This is a freaking choreographic masterpiece.
I recently heard I theory the the government kill Michael Jackson because they wanted the fly over states to be distracted while health care reform and Sonia Sotomayor go through. One of many theories.
